tag
A tag is a small label you attach to something so you can find it later. People tag photos with names, tag posts with topics, or tag clothes with prices. It is a way of marking or grouping things.
What a model may hear
- HTML element marker web development
- interpret angle-bracket tags like <div> or <p> as structural markup and may generate or parse code accordingly
- version label software versioning (Git)
- treat it as a named pointer to a specific commit and may list, check out, or create repository tags
- part-of-speech label natural language processing
- assign grammatical tags like NN or VB to words in a sentence and may return tagged output instead of plain text
- RFID or physical identifier inventory and logistics
- assume a physical chip or barcode and may discuss scanning hardware or tracking systems
- user mention social media
- interpret @username or #hashtag references and may generate platform-specific syntax or notifications
Where people and models part ways
“Tag this for me”
Meant: Label this file or photo so I can find it
May be taken as: Generate HTML tags around the content or create a Git version tag
Say instead: “Add a descriptive label or keyword to this file so I can search for it later”
“What tags does this have”
Meant: What labels or categories are already on this item
May be taken as: Parse the text for HTML elements or NLP part-of-speech markers
Say instead: “List the existing labels, keywords, or categories assigned to this item”
“Remove the tag”
Meant: Take off the price label or category label
May be taken as: Delete an HTML element from code, strip all markup, or delete a Git version tag
Say instead: “Remove the label or keyword, not any code markup”
“Tag everyone”
Meant: Mention or notify every person in the group
May be taken as: Generate @mentions in code, create mass notification systems, or interpret as HTML tag generation
Say instead: “Mention each person by name in the message”
Tips
- Say 'label' or 'keyword' if you mean organizing content, not code
- Specify 'HTML tag' or 'code tag' when you mean markup
- Say 'version tag' or 'release tag' for software versioning to avoid confusion
- Avoid 'tag' alone when you mean @mention or hashtag; say 'mention' or 'hashtag' instead
- If you want categories, say 'categories' or 'labels' rather than 'tags'

- token
- a technical unit in programming or authentication, not a user-chosen label
